Youth After School Program

These classes are for age 12 to 17. Come in and wind down after school between 3:30 and 5:00. We have a different activity every day and a free open day on Thursdays.

Mondays, we have Hip Hop for Youth with Rogers Rukeba
In this class, students will study the basic foundations to vocal rhythm (i.e. note stretching, rests, annunciation and syllable counting). Students will practice and enhance their mental capacity to construct complex multisyllable rhymes, through freestyle warm up exercises, and ice breakers. In addition to learning rhyme and rhythm, students will also learn to adopt key literary skills (such as hip-hop grammar structure, metaphors and descriptive writing) to compose music or poetry pieces that can later be performed publicly at a later date should the student feel at liberty or confidence to do so. The purpose of this class is to be a therapeutic outlet and/or an opportunity to hone skills for a possible passion career. There will be no grades for this program, but there will be a periodic survey review with feedback on the areas students would likely prefer to focus on.
Tuesdays, we have the Acoustic Jam with Scott Arnold
Rock out to a wide variety of songs. You get to choose the songs: From CCR to Doc Watson to Louis Armstrong to Jimmy Rodgers to The Eurythmics to Jack Johnson, we do it all and have a great time doing it. The songs are written out in a way that there is something for everyone. Beginners can do simple things to participate, learn how chord changes work and follow along. There are also alternate voicings for the chords, scale patterns and some extras to keep the more advanced players experimenting with new stuff.
Wednesdays, we have Garage Band Class with Jory Kinjo
Students will have an interactive experience on how to take a bands’ music to the next level and what is involved with playing gigs and then ultimately heading into the recording studio and releasing material.
Thursdays are the Free Open Day
Come on by and use the space to make music. We're opening it up for you to use for your artistic purposes. Even though it is free, you still have to sign up so we know who is here and sign in when you get here.
Friday, we have Up and Coming Youth Songwriters
Whether you are just starting out or you’ve been songwriting for a while there are always new things to learn and different ways to approach writing a song. In this class we will dive into all aspects of songwriting, from finding a great hook to what goes into writing the perfect bridge. We’ll cover lyrics, melodies, song structure and everything in between. With writing activities and lots of opportunity to collaborate with fellow classmates this will be a great way to get out of your comfort zone in a creative and supportive environment.
