Suzanne de Bussac is a singer/ songwriter, multi- instrumentalist, recording artist, producer, and music educator currently based in Calgary. Her early training took her through the Royal Conservatory Piano curriculum under the tutelage of Dr. Mary Munn, Michael Redshaw and Ron Proctor in Calgary, followed by a move to Toronto for continued studies in Fine Arts at York University.
Her career spans over 25 year career within the Canadian music industry is a potpourri of business and art, including an appointment as National Marketing Manager for HMV Canada, creator/producer of ACRadio for Air Canada, and video production work for Warner Music, Universal Music and CG pioneers Alias/Wavefront. In response to her many freelance endeavors Suzanne incorporated Tranzister Productions in 1996 and has been operating independently since. She has released two full length albums, been signed to a label, played countless shows, toured nationally, penned hundreds of songs, and lives by her mandate that music is love made visible.
Returning home to Calgary in 2005 for family reasons, Suzanne discovered Music For Young Children (MYC) through enrolling her 4 year old son in the program. Inspired by the fun and bounding they experienced in class combined with the soundness of the curriculum, Suzanne trained to become an MYC teacher and has been operating her practice since 2009. “MYC is the best music foundation program out there” she states. “It was created by a person with experience and training in 3 fundamental areas when it comes to working with children; A multitude of pertinent music degrees, a masters in Early Childhood Education, and above all else lived experience in motherhood! Each concept is reinforced to accommodate the various learning styles (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic) and the kids are in continuous motion through the hour. After a sit down listening exercise, they’re on their feet singing or dancing or at the keyboards before heading in to another quiet activity. Children can’t retain focus for a 1 hour lesson without movement, engagement and fun. We use puppets and tactile pieces, rhythm instruments, singing and dancing that combine foundational elements of notation, rhythm playing, keyboarding, solfege, composition, listening, theory, and age appropriate music history!” she says. “I don’t take on private piano students unless they have completed the MYC program” she adds. “The final year takes them through their Grade 1 piano examination, and the students are then ready to move on to their next stages of learning in one-on-one private lessons. They’re just not ready before then”.
When asked to sum up her over all musical practice and how she balances her creative work with parenting and teaching, she responds “Children and youth are the most honest and raw form of the human condition. I learn from them every day and they keep my heart humble and endeared to humanity. They keep the meaning of music pure for me and that feeds into my creative endeavors. I am honored and privileged to be able to make and share music for my life’s work”.
Suzanne resides in Calgary with her three children, two cats, three pianos, four keyboards, five guitars, accordion, marimba and bongos. She teaches MYC, piano, singing and performance, and performs her music regularly with her rock band The Fingers, her trio the Madhatters, and solo. She is currently preparing to record her next project LIQUIDS to be recorded and released in a series of 4 EPs in the forthcoming year.
