Description

This course offers students the first steps to playing jazz on the guitar. We will explore several jazz forms including altered blues, simple bossa nova and standards with descending fifth chord progressions. 
Each new piece will be studied in 2 class sessions. 
The first session will introduce the melody, the chord progression (along with a set of chord inversions) and a scale or series of scales/modes with which to improvise. 
The second session will be a ‘jam’ where participants play the piece, trading off on melody (or ‘the head’) chord accompaniment and bass lines. This will also be an opportunity to explore improvisation using the scales that were provided in the previous class.
By the end of the program students should have a small set of pieces that they will be reasonably comfortable playing in a ‘jam’ setting.

Murray Visscher

Canadian guitarist Murray Visscher has performed for audiences in major cities in Canada and the United States. He is in demand as a performer, adjudicator, and teacher.

He received his Masters Degree at the San Francisco Conservatory, under the guidance of renowned guitarist David Tanenbaum. During his classical studies, Murray also performed regularly with Bay area jazz ensembles.
