The Academy

The Asylum for Art is stepping up our game this winter. We are establishing a venue where art can live in the heart of Calgary. This new space will be the home for all the group guitar classes we put on as well as a home for other teachers to do private lessons and group classes. It is also a potential venue for concerts and other events that require a small sized room. It can be a rehearsal space, photo studio, meeting room, office space for arts organizations or pretty much anything that fits with the mandate of The Asylum for Art – Be your best.

Don’t worry, it won’t be far from the old location – about 10 blocks.

We will be taking over the entire second story of 2505 14 St SW. There are lots of windows with beautiful city views and even free parking! It is an empty space right now, so it is our canvas to make as we please. What a project we have gotten ourselves into! Construction begins Oct 21 – we are planning on opening our doors for classes January 1, 2020.

In addition to our current programming, we will be offering private lessons in other instruments, more group classes for more instruments and much, much more… We will be confirming our winter programming mid November.

Please call me if you have any questions regarding the move or just want to chat. 403 969 7257 – Scott Arnold.

Benchmarks for Hip-Hop Literacy – Poeticism and Literature

In this class, students will study the basic foundations to vocal rhythm (i.e. note stretching, rests, annunciation and syllable counting). Students will practice and enhance their mental capacity to construct complex multisyllable rhymes, through freestyle warm up exercises, and ice breakers. In addition to learning rhyme and rhythm, students will also learn to adopt key literary skills (such as hip-hop grammar structure, metaphors and descriptive writing) to compose music or poetry pieces that can later be performed publicly at a later date should the student feel at liberty or confidence to do so. The purpose of this class is to be a therapeutic outlet and/or an opportunity to hone skills for a possible passion career. There will be no grades for this program, but there will be a periodic survey review with feedback on the areas students would likely prefer to focus on.

Fretboard Harmony

Fretboard Harmony

Students enrolled in Fretboard Harmony Guitar Class will be given training in the idiomatic way the guitar works in all genres – from classical to country. The primary goal of the course is to become familiar with the rudimentary harmonic and melodic patterns used by the musicians we love and to unlock the mystery surrounding the recurrence of these patterns on the fretboard. We begin with fundamental musicianship training and expand that to the guitar. We explore artistic ways to approach improvisation. There is consistency between the musical examples for this class and Campfire Bootcamp 101 so students have an opportunity to put the theory into practice.

Garage Band Revival

Garage Band Revival

This isn't a class as much as it is a great place to get together in small groups to play  and share music. It will complement the Campfire Guitar Bootcamp 101 well in that there will only be 1 meeting/month and rather than learning a pile of songs and riding the wave in a big group weekly. There will only be a handful of songs, small groups and proper arrangements. Experiment with songwriting and learn the ins and outs of making arrangements.
