This is a 3 hr one day class on February 4, 2024 at 2pm

Welcome to Asylum for Art’s Bossa Nova guitar workshop.

The music of Brazil and in particular Bossa Nova and Samba have a rich, colourful history. Evolving from African rhythms, American jazz and Brazilian elements, these style have intricate, evocative and unique rhythmic structure and the harmonies are in part jazz voicings, but also are reminiscent of the melting pot that makes Brazil such a colourful and unique culture.

Come and get an introduction to this exotic style of guitar playing from someone who learned it from its roots.

 

 

 

 

What Will You Learn?

  • How to "feel" Brazilian rhythms, with its intricate layers and subdivisions
  • Authentic comping patterns for samba and bossa nova (in the style of Jobim and Gilberto)
  • Typical chord voicings used in Brazilian music
  • Applying the concepts above to 2 songs from the classic Brazilian repertoire
